The First 3 Things You Should Do When Marketing a New Business

So you’ve decided to start your own business or maybe you’ve already made the plunge. How do you market yourself and get the word out about your new endeavor? The world of marketing can seem overwhelming, so I’ve narrowed it down to the top 3 marketing tactics you should start on right away!

  1. Build a website.

You’re likely not an expert on website building. This is one of the few things I suggest always outsourcing. Your website is really the face of your business… it’s the first place people will see you, the place they will go to for information, and the overall representation of yourself and your brand image.

TIP: Make sure you find a company that includes you in their process and readily seeks your input and feedback. Before you get started, browse other websites and decide what features and design elements are most important to you.

  1. Develop your email list.

Who should go on your email list? EVERYONE! Whether current customers, referral partners, or prospective leads, add them to your list! Depending on your email marketing strategy, you may find it best to divide your list into segments so they are receiving audience-specific information.

The bottom line: consider everyone a potential lead and develop a solid strategy to keep them engaged and informed.

I suggest managing all your emails in MailChimp. It’s free to use until you reach 2000 names – perfect for new business owners!

  1. Establish a marketing plan.

What types of social media would work best for you, your product or services, and your clientele? Developing your marketing plan also includes considering your marketing budget and overall business goals.
